November 26th. Supporting Survivors Voices Oxford

Club Supports Powerful Women’s Group

The Zonta Club of Woodstock is proud to partner and support the Shine The Light Campaign with this group of amazing women during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.  Survivors Voices Oxford  lit the tree in front of Woodstock Police Services in purple for the third year.

Zonta Says NO Campaign Launch

Our campaign launched with inspiring guest speaker Sandra Monture, Executive Director of Ganohkwasra Family Assault Services located on the Six Nations of the Grand River. Logan Staats, Six Nations musician/songwriter, winner of a People’s Choice Award at the 2014 Aboriginal Music Awards entertained us with his exceptional musical talents.

Shockingly over 1200 Aboriginal women and girls have been murdered and/or missing, 7 times higher than non-Aboriginal women, and very little is being done. All those attending came away from this powerful event having an increased awareness of the barriers Aboriginal women and girls in Canada are experiencing.

Welcome to the Zonta Club of Woodstock’s new website.

Hello.  This website has been a work in progress and the reason this blog area has been dormant for quite some time.

Here’s what the club has been accomplishing since the last posting.

Zonta Golf Classic

The 2014 Golf Classic was a tremendous success and raised a net profit of over $22,000.  This success was because of the generosity of BDO our Event Title Sponsor, Scotiabank our Fundraising $ Sponsor, all other sponsors, donors and volunteers.  Thank you!

The weather held off and 107 golfers finished the day in great spirits.  Each year the Golf Classic Committee works hard to tweak the event to keep it fresh, address suggestions and ensure a tight program that allows participants to be home by 9:00 p.m.  Thank you to the 2014 Golf Classic Committee who did a fabulous job and the teamwork of all other Zonta members.

Brenda Currah, 2012-2014 President.

I want to take a moment to thank Brenda for dedicating the past two years to the club and to her role as Club President.  She spent an incredible amount of time working with club members; re-establishing our by-laws and developing a club strategic plan to ensure a solid foundation for our club to move forward in the coming years.  She was and is our International Women’s Day Committee Chairperson.  Last year Brenda and her committee revised our traditional morning breakfast into an evening event celebrating women.  The event was truly a great accomplishment and in conjunction with our yellow rose sale our club raised over $4,000.  These funds are designated to supporting Zonta International projects and the largest amount our club has contributed in many years.

New 2014-2016 Club Executive

I wish to introduce the members of the Zonta Club of Woodstock’s Executive.

Brenda Currah, Past President

Cheri Palmer, Vice President

Ann Pearce, Secretary

Allison Henkell, Treasurer

Donna Willoughby, Director

Lynda Reeves, Director

Cheryl Bunzenmyer-Rempel, Director

Cathy Lee, Director

This is a wonderful group of women that I look to for support in the coming two years.  As President, my goal in theory is simple.  It is to increase awareness of who the Zonta Club of Woodstock is and what this amazing club and its members do to help improve the status of women in this community and on a global scale.

To get started, our club participated in the Santa Claus Parade and we are now heading into the Zonta Says NO campaign and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.  Check out the website for more details!

Sheena Poole,

2014-2016 President

Golf Classic 2014

It is my pleasure to announce the Seventeenth Annual Zonta Club of Woodstock Golf Classic.  Our Classic will be held again at the Oxford Golf and Country Club (Craigowan) on Monday June 2, 2014.

Individual participation, community donations and sponsorships enabled our 2013 Classic to exceed a net proceed of $24,000.  The generosity of this community has allowed our club to disperse over $275,000 throughout Oxford County during the Classic’s history.  Participation in the 2014 Zonta Golf Classic will continue to assist women and girls in Oxford County.

The Zonta Golf Classic offers you the opportunity to not only have a wonderful day on the green with women; also the opportunity to assist women in this community and substantiate your interest in improving the health and status of women.  If golfing is not your secret passion sponsorship or personal donation opportunities are still available.

In the past year the Zonta Club of Woodstock has given 3 bursaries for post secondary school education to students in Oxford County, monetary recognition to a high student participating in local Public Affairs initiatives, and sponsorship of the Oxford County Breast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boat Team.  Our club has also partnered with many community organizations and financially supported programs such as Community Care Access Centre–Oxford, Big Sisters–Go Girls program, Domestic Abuse Services Oxford, Ingamo Homes, and Oxford County Children’s Aid and many more.

Consider participation in the Seventeenth Annual Zonta Golf Classic as a donor or golfer.  Please feel free to contact Elaine Nadalin, 2014 Zonta Golf Classic Chair at 519-537-2604 or at elaine.n@isp.com.

International Women’s Day Event Dinner 2014

Changing our format to an evening event has resulted in offering a keynote speaker, an international selection of food, silent auction, and rose sale. Several of these would not have been possible in the limited time allowable at a morning event. We are aware there are opportunities for us to improve and will be looking forward to offering an even better event next year.

We are very please to announce that approximately $3,200 will be going to support Zonta International Projects. This would not have been possible if not for our sponsors, volunteers, event attendees, suppliers, and interested parties in the community. Thank you!
