Who Are We and What Do We Do?

The Zonta Club of Woodstock is a service club and member of Zonta International.  Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.  There are 30,000 members in 67 countries working together to improve the lives of women and girls locally and internationally.

We are currently a small group of 22 women who are very passionate about improving the lives of women in Oxford County and have the privilege and opportunity to help women at a global level.  We raise funds through two major events and our Mint Smoothie sales so we can dispense net proceeds to meet our club mission and that of Zonta International.

We are also another one of Oxford County’s best kept secrets!

 Zonta’s History

In the early 1900s, while working in a prominent role at the Buffalo Express newspaper at a time when women rarely held leadership positions, playwright and journalist Marian de Forest conceived the idea of a strong network of women in executive positions who would work to take their rightful place in the professions next to men.

Early members were keenly aware of the challenges of carving a place for themselves in what was still a predominantly male domain. Zonta was founded as a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.  Nearly 33,000 members belong to more than 1,200 Zonta Clubs in 68 countries and geographic areas.

Women’s equality is not yet a reality.  Women worldwide still face systemized discrimination – they lack opportunities to live healthy lives, free from legal, social, economic and political inequality albeit in differing proportions.  Zonta International raison d’etre is to improve the status of women by empowering women to overcome barriers to equal human rights through its International Service Projects funded by the Zonta International.
